Re-enactment at Fort Garland Museum
On Saturday, Aug. 12, 9 am to 5 pm, the ‘citizen soldiers of Dodd’s Independent Company’ will be at Fort Garland Museum. This group of living historians from the Front Range focuses on the culture of Colorado’s militias between 1848 and 1865. Captain Theodore H. Dodd’s Independent Company, Colorado Volunteers was formed in Canon City in the fall of 1861 in anticipation of the Civil War moving west. The company was mustered into Federal service at Fort Garland in December 1861 and then headed south to New Mexico and the Battle of Valverde. The Fort Garland program will focus on the Independent Company before it was deployed to New Mexico.
Fort Garland Museum is free to residents of the San Luis Valley. For more information call the museum at 719-379-3512.
